Complex Trauma & CPTSD Therapy

Complex trauma can affect the way you experience yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, anxious, or stuck in patterns that developed as ways of coping with difficult experiences. Therapy can offer a space to understand these patterns with compassion and begin creating new ways of responding.

What Is Complex Trauma?

Complex trauma can develop when someone experiences repeated, ongoing, or difficult experiences that feel overwhelming or difficult to escape. These experiences can shape the way you see yourself, relate to others, and respond to stress long after the experiences have ended.

You may notice patterns such as anxiety, emotional overwhelm, difficulty trusting others, people-pleasing, perfectionism, feeling disconnected from yourself, or always being on alert. You may also understand intellectually that you're safe while your body and nervous system continue to respond as though something is wrong.

Therapy can provide a compassionate space to understand these patterns without judgment and begin developing new ways of responding.

How Complex Trauma Can Show Up

The effects of complex trauma can look different for everyone. You may find yourself overthinking, struggling with boundaries, feeling responsible for other people's emotions, or having difficulty knowing what you need. Relationships may feel complicated, or you may notice a pattern of disconnecting from your own feelings in order to keep the peace.

Some people experience heightened sensitivity to stress, difficulty relaxing, trouble feeling safe, or a strong need to stay in control. Others may feel numb, disconnected, or unsure of who they are outside of the roles and expectations they've carried for a long time.

These responses are not character flaws. They can be understandable adaptations to experiences that once required you to protect yourself, stay alert, or find ways to cope.

How Therapy Can Help

Healing from complex trauma isn't about erasing the past or changing who you are. It can be about developing a deeper understanding of yourself and the ways you've learned to cope.

In therapy, we can explore the experiences and patterns that continue to affect you while building greater awareness, self-compassion, and a stronger sense of safety within yourself. My approach is collaborative and trauma-informed, and we can work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Depending on your needs and goals, therapy may incorporate EMDR, Brainspotting, and IFS-informed therapy to support the processing of difficult experiences and help you move toward greater connection, flexibility, and ease.

Trauma-Informed Approaches to Healing

There is no single path to healing from complex trauma. Therapy can be tailored to your experiences, your goals, and what feels most supportive for you.

EMDR Therapy
EMDR can help you process distressing experiences and memories that continue to feel emotionally or physically activated.

Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a focused, body-oriented approach that can support the processing of experiences that may feel difficult to access through words alone.

IFS-Informed Therapy
IFS-informed therapy explores the different parts of yourself with curiosity and compassion. This can help you develop greater self-understanding, self-compassion, and internal balance.

We can explore these approaches together and determine what feels like the best fit for your needs.

Is Complex Trauma Therapy Right for You?

Complex trauma therapy may be a good fit if you find yourself struggling with patterns that seem difficult to change, even when you understand where they came from. You don't have to identify with a particular diagnosis or have every piece of your experience figured out before beginning therapy.

You may be seeking support because you're tired of feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, anxious, stuck, or responsible for everyone around you. You may want to understand yourself more deeply, improve your relationships, develop healthier boundaries, or feel more comfortable being yourself.

Therapy is a place where you can slow down, make sense of your experiences, and begin creating change with compassion rather than judgment.

You Don't Have to Have It All Figured Out

You don't need to know exactly what's wrong, have a diagnosis, or know where to begin before reaching out. Sometimes you simply know that the way you're living, coping, or relating isn't working anymore.

Therapy can be a place to slow down, get curious about what you're experiencing, and begin making sense of it together. You can come as you are, without having to have the right words or a clear plan.
